our team faced significant challenges with payment-based offers (PBOs). Despite leveraging existing rate
rule systems to generate Bank Offer coupons, we encountered various limitations that hindered user
satisfaction and operational efficiency.

Customers were adept at finding workarounds to bypass the intended usage limits on discount cards. This exploitation led to system leakages, impacting revenue and operational integrity. Our challenge was to redesign the system to mitigate these issues effectively.
The need to manage and configure discounts across two different systems resulted in operational inefficiencies. Additive rule-related leakages further complicated the management of PBO coupons. Streamlining these processes became a key focus to enhance efficiency and reduce leakage.

With a clear understanding of the problems, the design team retreated to their creative forge to craft their
solutions. They envisioned a new world where:
ENHANCE TRANSPARENCY
Users would see exact discounts and Net Effective Price (NEP) during their booking journey.
SMART PAYMENT RECOMMENDATIONS
The system would suggest the most suitable payment mode based on the applied coupon.
CLEAR ERROR MESSAGING
Users would receive precise and helpful error messages during validation issues.
COUPON ELIGIBILITY CHECKS
The system would filter out non-applicable coupons, ensuring users only saw relevant offers.

What kind of benefits would we unlock from this?
If we onboard additional tenants like Flights, Hotels and Buses to the new Coupon Engine, we can personalize PBO coupons, secure better deals, and optimize costs. Businesses will gain the ability to customize callouts, sort coupons, run flash sales, and enhance tech performance. This approach also simplifies the creation and maintenance of PBO coupons, boosting operational efficiency.

With designs in hand, we faced our next challenge implementing the solutions in the real world. Each implementation phase was a test of their resolve and ingenuity, requiring close collaboration with developers and stakeholders to ensure that the new system met the high standards they had set. Finding out the list of all payment modes possible
In our payment options journey, we meticulously mapped out the available modes to ensure a seamless experience for every user. Starting with Credit and Debit Cards, we covered all major networks like Visa, Mastercard, Amex, and Rupay, offering flexibility through a manually validated BIN list and an easy selection from top banks.
For those seeking installment plans, we introduced Credit Card EMI with customizable tenures and No Cost EMI options, alongside Cardless EMI from providers like HDFC and ICICI. We didn't stop there—Pay Later options, third-party wallets like Paytm and Amazon Pay, and even Gift Vouchers, CT Wallet, Supercoins, and good old Cash rounded out the list. Each mode was carefully designed to cater to the diverse needs of our users, creating a comprehensive and user-friendly payment ecosystem.

Laying the Groundwork
Before diving into various payment scenarios, we first identified the common use cases to ensure we covered the most frequent and expected situations. We then tackled the edge cases to address less common, yet crucial, scenarios. This approach helped us create a robust framework for managing all possible payment permutations and combinations.

Designing and Refining Payment Scenarios
After creating the regular payment screens for both standard and saved payment methods, we brainstormed to uncover any additional cases. Despite our extensive efforts, it was the engineers who highlighted some critical edge cases. We revisited these scenarios, iterating and refining until we arrived at the final designs.

Combination wallets let users choose between refund or reward + refund options, with similar app installation and value application.

Ensuring Transparency in PayLater and EMI Consent
The most crucial challenge was managing consent for PayLater and cashless EMI options, where user data must be shared to check eligibility. We worked diligently to ensure users are informed and give explicit consent before their information is shared, navigating through legal discussions and limitations to finalize a user-friendly and compliant design.

Streamlining Payment and Coupon Excellence
We revamped our payment and coupon system by defining clear payment restrictions, validating payment modes at checkout, and applying discounts accordingly. Redemption limits were set, and offers were configured to be valid at specific times. Custom success messages and descriptive error guidance enhanced the user experience. We displayed only eligible coupons, managed payment methods dynamically, and ensured accurate discount updates based on Cleartrip Wallet usage.

The Triumph of Transformation
As the new system went live, the team watched with anticipation as our designs transformed the user experience. The realm of PBOs in both app and desktop was now a place where users could easily navigate discounts, receive tailored payment recommendations, and enjoy a smoother, more transparent booking journey. The issues of usage limit exploitation and inefficient rules configuration were addressed, leading to a more efficient and user-friendly system.
